Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (erstwhile Aurangabad) is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is administrative headquarter of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Region (Marathwada Region) and is the largest city in the region. Located on a hilly terrain of Deccan Plateau. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is one of the most populous urban area in Maharashtra with population of 11,75,116 (as per Census 2011). The city is known for production centre of cotton and artistic silk fabrics. Several prominent educational institutions like Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, are located in the city. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is also called as tourism capital of Maharashtra, having UNESCO’ s World Heritage Sites like Ajanta and Ellora caves. Other tourist attractions include the Deoagiri Fort, Grishneshwar Temple, Jama Mosque, Bibi Ka Maqbara, Himayat Bagh, Panchakki and Salim Ali Lake. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is a Historical city and nicknamed as the "City of Gates".
Chhatrapati Sambhajijnagar Metropolitan Region Development Authority (CSMRDA) is Planning and Development Authority for the Chhatrapati Sambhajijnagar Metropolitan Region with an outlook towards channelizing growth in a strategic and orderly manner. CSMRDA was established on 1 st March 2017 under the provisions of the Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authority Act, 2016. As an integral component of the Regional Plan of Chhatrapati Sambhajijnagar district, CSMRDA plays a crucial role in shaping the development landscape of the region. Chhatrapati Sambhajijnagar district spans a total area of 10,100 square kilometres and comprises 09 tehsils. CSMRDA covers a substantial portion of the district, comprising approximately 21% of its total area, with a significant focus on planned development. CSMRDA's establishment marks a significant step towards coordinating and streamlining developmental efforts within the broader framework of Chhatrapati Sambhajijnagar's regional planning and growth strategy.
Chhatrapati Sambhajijnagar Metropolitan Region Development Authority (CSMRDA) delineates its boundaries across various talukas, encompassing diverse landscapes and strategic areas for development. Stretching approximately 14 kilometres to the east from the outer edges of the Chhatrapati Sambhajijnagar Municipal Corporation, CSMRDA extends into Chhatrapati Sambhajijnagar Taluka. To the west, its jurisdiction spans about 23 kilometres into the Gangapur Taluka. Towards north, CSMRDA covers an area of around 18 kilometres into the Phulambri Taluka, while in the south, it extends approximately 21 kilometres into the Paithan Taluka. In total, the area within CSMRDA's boundaries encompasses about 2097.16 square kilometres, offering ample space for planned growth and development initiatives. CSMRDA's jurisdiction encompasses a diverse landscape, comprising numerous villages and talukas within its boundaries, it includes Chhatrapati Sambhajijnagar Municipal Corporation, Cantonment Board, Khultabad Municipal Council, Phulambri Municipal Council along with 313 villages across adjoining 05 talukas.
